Since Marco Polo times China has been known to Europeans as Cathay, while Beijing as Khanbaliq. It was through the first Portuguese colonies in the Eastern Asia the Europeans once again learned about China and Beijing. It is apparent that the place and role of Armenian people in the development of relations between East and West was very important. The journey undertaken by the Portuguese Jesuit missionary Bento de Göis and his Armenian companion Isaac to China in 1602 – 1607 from Lahore comes to prove this opinion.
